The Ideas That Guide My Life
Every life is built upon something.
Whether we recognize it or not, each of us is shaped by the experiences we have, the questions we ask, the people who influence us, and the values we choose to carry forward.
These are the foundations I continue to return to. They are not rules I have perfected, nor beliefs I claim to embody flawlessly. Rather, they are principles that help orient my life, my work, and the way I hope to engage with others.
Like everything else on this website, they remain a work in progress.
Understanding
If there is one idea that sits at the center of everything I do, it is understanding.
The world is full of assumptions, quick judgments, and easy conclusions. I have found that genuine understanding asks something different of us. It asks us to listen before speaking, to remain curious before becoming certain, and to remember that every person carries a story we cannot see.
Whether I am teaching music, writing an essay, creating a photograph, or simply sharing a conversation, my hope is always the same: to better understand the world and to help others feel understood within it.
Curiosity
Curiosity has been one of the greatest gifts of my life.
It has led me toward music, photography, literature, philosophy, science, history, and countless conversations that have expanded my perspective.
Questions have often taught me more than answers.
The older I become, the less interested I am in pretending to know everything, and the more grateful I am for the opportunity to continue learning.
Lifelong Learning
Education is not confined to classrooms.
Some of life’s greatest teachers have been books. Others have been failures, friendships, travel, performances, quiet mornings, and unexpected moments that changed the direction of my thinking.
Learning is not something to complete.
It is a way of living.
Creativity
Creativity is not reserved for artists.
It is the human ability to imagine, to solve problems, to express ideas, and to bring something into existence that did not exist before.
Whether composing a piece of music, photographing a landscape, writing a reflection, or teaching a lesson, creativity reminds me that every day offers another opportunity to contribute something meaningful.
Beauty
Beauty has a remarkable ability to slow us down.
Sometimes it is found in a sweeping landscape.
Sometimes it is hidden in ordinary moments.
The changing light through a window.
A melody remembered years later.
The texture of old wood.
The laughter of friends.
Beauty asks us to pay attention, and in doing so, reminds us that life is richer than we often realize.
Craftsmanship
Anything worth creating deserves care.
Craftsmanship is not about perfection. It is about intention.
It is choosing to do ordinary things well, paying attention to details that others may never notice because those details quietly shape the whole.
Whether building a website, composing music, teaching a lesson, or writing a single paragraph, I believe thoughtful work honors both the creator and the person receiving it.
Reflection
We live in a world that constantly encourages movement.
Reflection invites us to pause.
To consider where we have been.
To recognize what we have learned.
To appreciate what has been given.
Without reflection, experience easily becomes activity.
With reflection, experience becomes wisdom.
Community
No meaningful life is lived alone.
Every teacher, friend, family member, student, colleague, and stranger who has shared a conversation has contributed in some way to the person I continue to become.
Community reminds us that we grow not only through our own experiences, but through our willingness to learn from one another.
Gratitude
Gratitude changes the way we see the world.
It shifts our attention from what is missing to what has already been given.
The opportunity to learn.
The privilege of creating.
The kindness of others.
The gift of another ordinary day.
Gratitude reminds me that life is less about achievement than appreciation.
Becoming
None of these foundations are finished.
I expect them to deepen, to change, and perhaps even to be challenged as life continues to unfold.
That is part of becoming.
This page is not meant to offer conclusions.
It is simply a snapshot of the ideas that continue to guide me today.
If these reflections encourage you to consider your own foundations, then perhaps they have already served their purpose.
